The Ivanna Eudora Kean High School Music Department spread lots of holiday cheer at its Christmas Around the World concert held on December 15 in Café Kean. The highly anticipated annual school event featured holiday music staples highlighting various regions from around the world performed by the concert choir, concert band, jazz band, steel pan ensemble and the Kean Music Styles group.
Music Department Chair Monet Davis welcomed guests and brought greetings on behalf of the school administration. Senior Quiannah Potter narrated the evening’s performances while keeping the audience entertained with her humor. The steel pan ensemble, under the direction of Anthony Nibbs, opened the concert with the Spanish Christmas-favorite, Mamacita. In between musical selections, students from Kean’s Theater Tech class performed mini skits depicting scenes of a couple participating in several Christmas activities.
Kean’s Dynamite Finest Dancers delighted the audience with a jazz performance to the sounds of the concert band, directed by Brandon Reburn. Throughout the evening, the jazz band, concert choir, concert band and steel ensemble performed beautifully arranged holiday favorites such as Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, The Christmas Song, Jingle Bells, Joy to the World and Silent Night. Kean Music Styles gave a high-energy performance in which they covered St. Croix’s Express Band’s Christmas Medley and the concert band concluded with a VI Christmas selection performing Guavaberry and Mama Make Your Johnny Cake.
The Music Department closed out the evening with acknowledgements and thanked sponsors, supporters and well-wishers.
