The Lew Muckle Elementary School Lions roared with pride on their January 30 Roar Day, as students were recognized for exhibiting exemplary behavior among their peers over the last month.
According to Assistant Principal Erick Willie, on the last Thursday of each month, a school-wide assembly is held to celebrate students in each class that attained the coveted Student-of-the-Month title in the previous month. During the brief, but lively ceremony held outdoors near the school's basketball court, each Student of the Month is called, along with his or her teacher, and is awarded a certificate of achievement. Seventeen students are recogized each month, amounting to one student per class.
Criteria and guidelies for Lew Muckle's Student of the Month are set by the school's administration:
- Displays excellent character
- Outstanding behavior
- Positive attitude toward others and learning
- Good citizenship throughout the month
- Demonstrates responsibility
- Respectful to peers and teachers
- Follows classroom/school rules and expectations
On Roar Day, students' grade levels are identified by color-coded t-shirts donning the acronym ROAR on the back: R-Respect Everyone; O-Own Your Actions; A-Act Responsibly; R-Respond Wisely. The statement is part of the school's PBIS mantra, which helps to reinforce positive behavior and practices in students on and off the campus. As for the t-shirt colors, kindergarten students wear gold; first grade students wear purple; second grade students wear read; third grade students wear teal; fourth grade students wear neon green; fifth grade students wear neon orange; sixth grade students wear royal blue and office staff wears hot pink.
An extra-special part of Roar Day is when Lion, the school's mascot, makes his grand appearance. Lion could be seen cheering students on and even busting some cool dance moves on the basketball court, to the delight of students and staff.
