Highlights From Special Olympics 2016

The annual Special Olympics games in the Virgin Islands bring together some of the Territory's best athletes at the top of their game. The 2016 games were no different.

In the St. Thomas-St. John District, 40 athletes participated this year--including students from various schools and residents of the Yellow Cedar Residence. Athletes participated in track events, standing long jump, softball and tennis throws, and basketball skills. A planned bocce demonstration was postponsed because of weather conditions. Mrs. Sheryl Serrano-Griffith, district director of Special Education, helped coordinate and promote the games, which were held at the Charlotte Amalie High School, along with Kishma Creque of the Disability Rights Center of the Virgin Islands.

Student and adult athletes came out in large numbers in the St. Croix District to participate in the games, held at the St. Croix Educational Complex. Governor Kenneth Mapp attended and congratulated athletes for a job well done. Janna Lee coordinated the effort on St. Croix in conjunction with the St. Croix district Division of Special Education.
