KYLE LEWIS (blue shirt), and JAMOY HARDY (red shirt) of the John H. Woodson Jr. High receive prizes from Danielle De Chabert of the Frederiksted Twin City Lions Club after Hardy placed first and Lewis second in the Club’s 6th Annual Speech Competition held at the Port Authority Cruise Lounge at the Henry E. Rohlsen Airport on Sunday, April 3, 2016.

Jamoy Hardy of the John H. Woodson Jr. High school took the first place honors in the Frederiksted Twin City Lions Club 6th Annual Speech Competition held at the Port Authority Cruise Lounge at the Henry E. Rohlsen Airport on Sunday, April 3, 2016.  Kyle Lewis, also a student at John H. Woodson Jr. High placed 2nd in the contest.

The students spoke for about seven minutes without props on the topic “If you were governor of the Virgin Islands, what would you do to combat crime?” The speech competition was opened to junior high students in public, private and parochial schools on St. Croix.  Hardy and Lewis were coached by their English Language Arts Teacher Chantelle Greene-Quinones.

As governor, Jamoy Hardy's said he would address the mental health issues of residents who repeatedly commit crimes and find solutions instead of sending them off to prison as common criminals. He will work also to limit the exposure to violence that young children in the territory experience from the internet, TV, music and video games.  In his speech, Kyle Lewis said if he was governor he will ensure a police presence throughout the island’s communities and he would make street cameras mandatory.

Hardy won a laptop computer and Lewis a Tablet with a keyboard.  Third place winner Xavier Hinkson of St. Patrick’s School also received a Tablet.

Organizer of the Club’s speech competition Susannah Simmonds said the presentations were great and feels the students should be further recognized for their brilliance.  Ms. Simmonds is encouraging senior students in the public school to apply for the upcoming Twin City Lions Club Scholarship.
