The Virgin Islands Department of Education will celebrate Week of the Young Child (WOYC), April 10-16, 2016, with a host of school-based activities and culminating events held across the two school districts.
Week of the Young Child is an annual celebration sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children that brings public attention to the needs of young children and their families, and recognizes the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs.
St. Thomas-St. John District Culminating Event – Friday, April 15, 2016
- The day will begin at 9:00 a.m. with a march from Emile Griffith Park to Addelita Cancryn Jr. High School’s field. Fun-filled activities are planned for students ranging from birth though age 8 attending the district’s daycare centers, head start programs, and public, private and parochial schools.
St. Croix District Culminating Event – Friday, April 15, 2016
- The fun event will take place at the David Canegata Ballpark, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. It is geared toward students in kindergarten, first and second grades. Participating schools include Pearl B. Larsen, Juanita Gardine, Eulalie R. Rivera, Lew Muckle, Alfredo Andrews and Alexander Henderson. Among other fun activities, there will be musical selections from the Arthur a. Richards Jr. High School Band and DJ Vladimir Williams. There will also be guest appearances by Langford and Doc McStuffin. Participating community stakeholders will include: VITEMA, Fire Department, Highway Safety, St. Croix Environmental, STX Jeep Club, McGruff the Crime Dog, My Sistahs Keeper, Inc., Book Mobile, Waste Management, Sports Mania, Book Corner, Smart Art, Zumba and Local Instruments. Sponsors include Food Town Supermarket, Plaza Extra West, Chicken Shack, Celestine Construction and Tata's Bakery.
