Banco Popular Sponsors Recognition Event for St. Croix Special Ed. Employees

The Virgin Islands Department of Education, Division of Special Education, St. Croix District, hosted a recognition event for Special Education professionals on Sunday, March 13 at Martini Lounge in Christiansted. The event, sponsored by Banco Popular, recognized the dedication and efforts of those working in the field.

Attended by almost 100 teachers, paraprofessionals, parents, related service providers, special education administrators and several Banco Popular representatives, the evening proved to be an unforgettable one. Attendees participated in a number of activities designed to strengthen professional ties for future collaborative exchange, while enjoying music by DJ Tony and catered hors d’oeuvres from Top Class Catering. Prizes were also raffled throughout the evening.

“It was a forum for special education professionals to meet socially to exchange ideas outside of the workplace,” remarked Mrs. Maureen Moorehead, district coordinator for special education. “We were so grateful Banco Popular welcomed this opportunity to sponsor a recognition event on St. Croix, as it had done on St. Thomas last year.”

Mrs. Oran Bowry, senior vice president and regional manager at Banco Popular, with the assistance of Ms. Shayla Solomon, regional projects coordinator worked closely with the Department of Education to plan the event. The feedback from several attendees was it was a success because they left feeling appreciated for the work they do. Banco Popular has agreed to host the event for next year.

Lyrhea Bryan-Heyliger, district director, praised the work of Special Education professionals. “Special education professionals often work with the most challenging students in the school system. This event was our opportunity to say thank you to all of the special education professionals and paraprofessionals for all that they do to positively impact the lives of children with disabilities and their families, and to let them know how much they are valued and appreciated,” she said. The Division of Special Education services 630 students on St. Croix, ages 3 through 21, in public, private and preschool settings with a staff of 125 professionals under The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). This law governs and ensures services to children with a wide range of disabilities at no cost to families. It is important for children to be screened and evaluated for early intervention. Identification and immersion in special education programs and services, along with family support, offers children the best opportunities for development.
