Cultural Workshops and Performances Mark VI History Celebrations at Arthur Richards

Arthur A. Richards steel pan orchestra perform during VI History Month celebrations at the school on April 7, 2017.

Students at the Arthur A. Richards Jr. High School got their turn to put on a cultural show in observance of V.I. History Month on Friday, April 7. The day-long event began with drummers and masqueraders parading through the school’s corridors to the gymnasium, where a short program was held.

The sweet sounds of the steel orchestra filled the gymnasium as students, faculty and staff settled in to enjoy the show. Performers included Cariso singer Cedelle Christopher and her young back-up singers, cheerleaders, Latina dancers and the Sweet Peppa Quelbe Band.

Students left the auditorium excited to attend workshops on everything from how to make candies, carve calabash, cook on a coal pot, bee keeping, storytelling, basket weaving, woodwork and how to juice local fruits for a profit.

Later, students got down to showing off cultural wear during a fashion show, got involved in conch shell blowing and yard games. The “We Deh Yah” Quadrille Dancers closed out the spectacular celebration.
