The Addelita Cancryn Junior High School was one of many schools across the territory that celebrated Music in Our Schools Month in March by participating in a mini concert series. On March 15, the school's Music Department showcased what students are learning in the classroom with performances by the concert band, concert choir, steel pan ensemble and jazz band ensemble.
Currently, there are 85 students enrolled in Cancryn's music program, and they learn everything from how to read notes and count rhythms, to listening to music and music appreciation. The teachers seek ways to expand students' musical capabilities by increasing the difficulty of the material taught in the classroom. During the mini concert, steel pan students played music from Trinidad that expanded their skill set and the choir was challenged by singing more difficult harmonies. Band students were also challenged in their technique. The teachers do this in order to prepare students for high school music classes, and hopefully inspire students to pursue a career in music or as a life-long hobby.
Cancryn's music students will hit the stage again during the school's annual Calypso Showcase that will feature Junior Calypso contestants participating in Carnival festivities. On May 11, the school will also host its annual Spring Concert.
