Lew Muckle Students Build New Box Gardens and Repair Old Ones

The Agriculture Committee at Lew Muckle Elementary School recently began constructing new box gardens around campus and making repairs to others. The team reached out to parents and guardians to get the project underway on Saturday, March 18.

"We were able to complete filling the first and second grade boxes with top soil," explained Ms. Burton, agriculture committee member. "The kindergarten and third grade boxes were lined and we began filling them with top soil."

Ms. Burton invites parents back to the school during the week of March 20-24, 2017 to participate in National Agriculture Week activities, and to help complete the kindergarten and third grade box gardens. "The intermediate boxes we are hoping will be lined and filled by our capable intermediate students during their lunch period," she said. "We will be distributing cups, seeds, and soil to grades 3-6 so they can begin growing their seedlings."  KG-2 students will also receive seedlings to plant.

Special thanks to parents--Ms. Lucy LaPlace, Ms. Melissa Benneizson, and Ms. Katherine Martin--as well as to Velda L. Hendricks, director of Agriculture St. Croix district. Special thanks to students Joanny Moreno, Tawana Moreno, Ge'Kari Knight, Khm-shaw Samuel, and Kikongo Miller along with Ilyssa Brooks' sister. Thanks to Ms. B. James for providing water and to Mr. Peter who helped assemble the garden boxes as well as repair those in need of repair.
