CAHS Nursing Assistant Students Host On-Campus Health Fair

Students enrolled in Charlotte Amalie High School's Nursing Assistant Class IV hosted a health fair in the school's gymnasium on February 24 as part of a special class project. The activity's goal was to prepare students to address chronic health concerns prevalent in the local community, such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity and reproductive system diseases.

The health fair provided the opportunity for students to share health information and practical skills obtained in the Nursing Assistant class. Students demonstrated clinical practical procedures, such as BMI (Body Mass Index) and BP (Blood Pressure) measurements, as well as performed finger sticks to obtain blood under supervision of licenced registered nurses and pre-parental signed consents for children under the age of 18.

Guest Speaker Edith Ramsey-Johnson, PhD., addressed the debilitating outcome of diabetes if the condition is not managed or controlled. Keisha Williams from the Department of Health captivated the youth with reproductive health tips and demonstrations.

A host of creative exercise activities and preparations of healthy nutritional treats were enjoyed by students, faculty and staff who attended.
