St. Croix Central High School will welcome students and staff to a new library at the start of the 2022-2023 school year.

According to William Matthew, Department of Education Operations Manager, an existing open-air pick-up/drop-off structure on the school’s campus was converted into the new 1,500 sq. ft. library. The previous library had been shuttered since sustaining damages in the 2017 hurricanes.

“This construction was initiated by the Department because the original library is rapidly deteriorating and deemed unfit for students, faculty and staff,” Matthew said. “Health and safety are our number one priority, hence the reason why we have completed this building in time for the new school year.”

Matthew said the reconstruction began in March 2021 at a total cost of approximately $160K. The design was done by the Department’s Operations unit and local contractor, Heights Construction, completed the build.

The new library features an ADA-compliant ramp, impact windows, 18-inch reinforced concrete masonry blocks, air conditioning, new electrical outlets, commercial-grade metal doors, new vinyl tiles, and a vibrant yellow exterior and cream interior.

Matthew thanked the Department of Planning and Natural Resources for expediting the review and permitting process so the library could be completed prior to the opening of school on Aug. 8.
