FY 2016 Summer Food Service Program Sponsor And Job Applications Now Available

ST. THOMAS, USVI – The Virgin Islands Department of Education State Office of Special Nutrition Programs has announced the availability of the 2016 Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) sponsor application packages and summer job applications.

Public or non-profit organizations interested in becoming a sponsor, as well as high school or college students interested in applying for a summer job may obtain the desired application by contacting the State Office of Special Nutrition Programs at (340) 774-0100 x 2817 (St. Thomas-St. John) or (340) 773-1095 x 7082 or x 7046 (St. Croix).

Submission deadline for the sponsor application package is Friday, May 13, 2016. Submission deadline for summer job applications is Friday, May 27, 2016.

School-age children from years 2 - 18 may receive free meals through SFSP. Persons 19 years of age and older with mental or physical disability (as determined by a state or local educational agency) and who participates during the school year in a public or private non-profit school program (established for the mentally or physically disabled) is also eligible to receive meals.

Steel Ensembles Invited To Participate In Pan on the Green Musical Showcase

ST. CROIX, USVI Steel ensembles on St. Croix are invited to register for participation in the 2016 edition of  Pan on the Green competition scheduled on Saturday, May 14, 2016 at 6 p.m. at the St. Croix Educational Complex football field.  Steel ensembles or orchestras from schools, churches, businesses and community organizations are eligible to perform.

An entry fee of $100 is required to participate in Pan on the Green.  Each ensemble will play a musical piece of their choice, and Pianist and Composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s classic, “Eine kleine Nachtmusik” for a total of 20 minutes.   Translated “a little serenade” in German, the Mozart composition is written for an ensemble of two violins, viola and cello with optional double bass. The musical arrangement is often performed by string orchestras.

The winning steel ensemble receives a monetary prize of a $1,000.

Admission is $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for children.  Participating ensembles receive 30 tickets to contribute to their fundraising efforts.
