Irma and Maria may have blown their angry winds, but Director of Agriculture for the St. Croix District, Mrs. Velda Hendricks is determined to rebuild the Agriculture Ed program and produce fruitful harvests.
Despite the many challenges, teachers have regrouped and students are even more enthusiastic to engage in outdoor learning. However, even though the rain is a blessing, the constant downpour has somewhat hindered progress with the program.
Students at the Career and Technical Vocational Agriculture class have already utilized tools and equipment available to clear overgrown garden and are in preparations of propagating seeds and cuttings for planting. Students even got an opportunity to learn how to drive the tractor through instruction from the agriculture teacher, Mr. Tyrone Molyneaux.
Ricardo Richards garden club has also begun clearing overgrown vegetation from their boxes. This year each K-6 class will be assigned a box and gardening will be conducted every Friday due to the double session schedule.
John H. Woodson Jr. High School, despite having been one of the schools that had to relocate from its original campus, have already began planting using different methods. At that same location, paperwork has already been put in place to have the actual garden area prepared by a tractor in order to produce an abundance of crops.
Other schools such as Claude O. Markoe, Juanita Gardine, Alternative Ed, Youth Rehabilitation Center, Elena Christian Jr. High and Eulalie Rivera schools will be up and running for the new year, to include Saturday projects.
Director Hendricks is hopeful, and despite the lack of resources she is pushing forward and providing teachers and school staff the tools necessary to rebuild their gardens. The Junior High and secondary agriculture teachers have received instructional pacing guides and have begun using the National Agriculture Standards within their lessons.
The Agriculture Division, St. Croix district will continue to showcase progress with the Ag. program as we move into the new year.
