Commissioner McCollum Tours Hurricane-Ravaged Schools with USDOE Official Jason Botel

Education Commissioner Dr. Sharon Ann McCollum hosted the U.S. Department of Education’s Acting and Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Elementary and Secondary Education Jason Botel. 

Botel flew into the territory on Sunday, October 22 and toured the damaged schools and Education facilities in St. Thomas with McCollum and the St. Thomas - St. John District Insular Superintendent Dionne Wells-Hedrington and Deputy Superintendent Racquel Berry-Benjamin.

On Monday, both Botel and McCollum flew to St. Croix and visited damaged and destroyed schools with St. Croix Superintendent Colleen Mae Williams before meeting with Governor Kenneth Mapp. Botel and McCollum flew back to St. Thomas midday and visited the only school on St. John which suffered severe hurricane-related damages.

Botel pledged support from the U.S. Department of Education, on behalf of Secretary Betsy DeVos.
