Devil Rays and Lady Caribs Dominate in MLK Basketball Tournament Championship

 

On Monday, January 21 the Ivanna Eudora Kean High School Devil Rays showed up and showed out to claim the championship title over the St. Croix Central High School Caribs 58-52 in the final game of the Martin Luther King Jr. Tournament. For the girls’ division, the Central High Lady Caribs dominated throughout the tournament to claim the championship title against the Charlotte Amalie High Lady Hawks 43-38 in the final game.

The Devil Rays and the Lady Caribs won big as they secured $2,000.00 for their respective athletic programs to purchase equipment and supplies.

Friday

 

Boys Division:

Elmore Stoutt High 55, All Saints Cathedral 9:

The Rams, from Tortola, opened Friday’s tournament play with a runaway victory over the Vikings.

Elroy Bollers singlehandedly outscored All Saints Cathedral (0-1) with a game-high 15 points for Elmore Stoutt High (1-0), with Khalique Bradley making three 3-pointers and had 11 points in the fourth quarter.

DeVante Callwood had five points to lead the Vikings, who trailed 24-3 at the half and made only two field goals the entire game.

V.I. School of Technical Science 57, Ss. Peter and Paul 12:

V.I. Tech (1-0) opened with a 17-0 run in the first quarter to put Friday’s win over the Jaguars (0-1).

V.I. Tech went on to lead 29-9 at the halftime break, then put the game away by outscoring Ss. Peter and Paul 28-3 over the final two quarters.

No information was available on the leading scorers for either V.I. Tech or the Jaguars.

Free Will Baptist 46, Bregado Flax Educational Centre 21:

The Warriors (1-0) dominated from the start, leading by 21 points in the first half en route to their tournament opening win over Bregado Flax (0-1).

Free Will Baptist bolted to a 17-2 lead by the end of the first quarter, and went up 30-9 at the halftime break.

No information was available on the leading scorers for the Warriors or Bregado Flax.

 

Girls Division:

Charlotte Amalie High 34, Ivanna Eudora Kean High 23:

The Lady Hawks (1-0) used a big second and third quarter to take the lead and pull away from their island rivals Lady Rays (0-1)

Ivanna Eudora Kean High led 7-4 at the end of the first quarter, but Charlotte Amalie High took the lead with a 17-5 run in the second quarter.

Now ahead 21-12 at the half, the Lady Hawks extended their lead into double digits with a 7-3 run.

No information was available on the leading scorers for either Charlotte Amalie High or Ivanna Eudora Kean High.

 

Saturday

 

Boys Division

Educational Complex High 45, Elmore Stoutt High School 43:

Vincent Joseph scored 13 of his game-high 16 points in the second half as the Barracuds (1-0) held off a fourth-quarter rally by the Sonics (1-1).

Tied 23-all at the half, Complex outscored ESHS 15-10 in the third quarter to take a 38-33 lead entering the final period. However, the Sonics kept things close in the fourth quarter.

Diorys Joseph and Elroy Bollers had 14 points each for the Sonics.

Ivanna Eudora Kean High 73, V.I. Tech 17:

The Devil Rays (1-0) put together a big first half, plus some solid defense throughout the game, to rout V.I. Tech.

Ten different players scored for Kean High in the first half in leading 29-4 at the end of the first quarter, and 47-6 at the half.

Keshawn Mason scored a game-high 12 points, with Anthony Etienne and Devon Freeman adding 11 points each for the Devil Rays.

Kawa Williams and Meshon Charles had five points each for V.I. Tech (1-1).

Charlotte Amalie High 48, Freewill Baptist 30:

While the Warriors (1-1) got a game-high 20 points from Brandon Rasmussen, the Hawks (1-0) got points from more of their roster in winning their tournament opener.

Ten players scored for Charlotte Amalie High, led by seven points each from Shirmoy O’Garro, Rowan Hanley and Ke-ion Gabriel, while only three scored for Free Will.

That balance. As well as a 16-2 run in the first quarter, allowed the Hawks to take a 24-8 halftime lead.

All Saints Cathedral School 43, Bregado Flax Educational Centre 36:

Sebastian Silva scored a game-high 25 points as the Vikings (1-1) rallied in the second half to beat the Arabians (1-1).

Down 16-13 at the half, Silva scored seven of All Saints’ 13 points in the third quarter, while holding Bregado Flax to just seven points. Silva then put up 11 of the Vikings’ 17 fourth-quarter points to put the game away.

Jahdique Winchester led the Arabians with 14 points.

Antilles School 79, Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic School 8:

The Hurricanes (1-1) bounced back from their Friday night loss with the highest scoring game of the tournament in routing an undermanned Ss. Peter and Paul (0-2) squad.

Nine players scored for Antilles,with four finishing in double figures: Louis Penn III had a game-high 19 points, Hobie James added 12 points, Sharan Chawla had 11 points and Joseph Sibilly 10 points.

That allowed the Hurricanes to break out to a 31-1 lead at the end of the first quarter and 50-3 at the half. No information was available on Ss. Peter and Paul’s leading scorers.

Central High 71, Charlotte Amalie High 44:

The Caribs improved to (2-0) in the tournament, riding a big second quarter run to a win over the Hawks.

Leading just 13-8 at the end of the first quarter, Central High outscored Charlotte Amalie High (1-1) 27-14 in the second quarter for a 40-22 lead at the halftime break.

Jahmai Jones scored a game and tournament-best 32 points to lead the Caribs.

Shirmoy O’Garro had 17 points for the Hawks.

Elmore Stoutt High 59, All Saints Cathedral 44:

The Sonics (2-1) remained in the hunt for the tournament title, riding a big first half to a win over the Vikings (0-2).

Kimmoy Caines scored 14 points and Diorys Joseph added 12 points for Elmore Stoutt High, which led 29-19 at the halftime break. Sebastian Silva scored a game-high 19 points and Devante Callwood added 16 points for All Saints. 

Antilles School 52, V.I. Tech 20:

The Hurricanes won for the second time Saturday, using balanced scoring and a big first half to take command against V.I. Tech (1-2).

Three players finished in double figures, and eight scored altogether, for Antilles: Joseph Sibilly had a game-high 15 points, Louis Penn III added 13 points and Hobie James scored 10 points.

The Hurricanes led 29-10 at the halftime break, then put the win away by outscoring Tech 23-10 over the final two quarters. Meshon Charles led V.I. Tech with 10 points.

Ivanna Eudora Kean High 56, Educational Complex High 47:

The Devil Rays also improved to 2-0, pulling away in the fourth quarter to beat the Barracudas (1-1).

Jahfari Samuel Jr. scored 10 points to lead 12 players scoring for Kean High, which trailed 38-37 through three quarters. But N’Khor Archibald scored all eight of his points in the fourth quarter, and the Devil Rays outscored Complex 19-9 in the final period.

Vincent Joseph scored a game-high 12 points and Anthony Martinez added 11 points for the Barracudas.

Free Will Baptist 51, Elmore Stoutt High 47:

The Warriors (2-1) bounced back from their first loss earlier Saturday, but had to hold off the Sonics’ second-half rally.

Behind a game-high 24 points from Brandon Rasmussen and 10 points by Chad Malloy, Free Will Baptist led 25-14 at the halftime break.

But Elmore Stoutt High made things interesting in the second half, outscoring the Warriors 33-26 over the final two quarters.

Diorys Joseph had 15 points and T’quan Stout added 12 points for the Sonics (2-2).

   

 

Girls Division

Central High 50, Ivanna Eudora Kean 48: 

The Lady Caribs (1-0) moved into Monday’s championship game pulling ahead of the Lady Devil Rays (0-2) in the fourth quarter. 

Down 25-21 at the half, Kean High tied the score at 33-all at the end of the third quarter. But Central High outscored the Lady Devil Rays 17-15 in the final period: D’ani Hospedales led the Lady Caribs with 25 points, with 15 coming in the fourth quarter. Breyanna Roberts added 14 points.

Ahlanee’ Cook scored a game-high 26 points and Keithrace Smith added 19 points for Kean High.

 

Sunday

 

Boys Division:

Charlotte Amalie High 37, Antilles School 28:

Shirmoy O’Garro score a game-high 17 points, and the Hawks (2-1) pulled away in the even quarters to eliminate the Hurricanes (2-2)

Tied at 10-all at the end of the first quarter, Charlotte Amalie High outscored Antilles 8-3 in the second quarter to pull ahead 18-13 at the half.

After an even third quarter, the Hawks added to their lead with an 11-7 run in the fourth quarter.

Louis Penn III scored 13 points to lead Antilles School.

Central High 49, Ivanna Eudora Kean High 47:

The Caribs remained undefeated in tournament play by holding off the Devil Rays’ fourth-quarter rally.

Central High led 35-30 after three quarters, but Kean High went on a 17-14 run in the fourth quarter to close the gap.

Jahmai Jones scored a game high 19 points and Dashaunne Graham added 16 points for the Caribs. 

Eddy Jean Louis had 12 points and Jerimiah James added 10 points for Kean High.

St. Croix Educational Complex High 47, Freewill Baptist Christian School 36:

The Barracudas (2-1) held the Warriors (2-2) to single-digit scoring over the first three quarters.

Vincent Joseph led Complex with 11 points, with eight players scoring as the Barracudas led 22-14 at the half and 33-22 entering the fourth quarter. 

Brandon Rasmussen scored a game-high 21 points for Free Will Baptist.

Charlotte Amalie High 29, Educational Complex High 17:

The Hawks (3-1) put together one big quarter in a low-scoring game to beat the Barracudas (2-2)

Charlotte Amalie High outscored Complex 15-7 in the second quarter, turning what had been a 5-3 lead after the first period into a 18-12 margin at halftime.

The Hawks then outscored the Barracudas 11-5 over the final two quarters.

Ramon Robles Jr. scored a game-high 10 points to lead Charlotte Amalie High.

Elijah Johannes and Anthony Martinez had five points each for Complex.

Ivanna Eudora Kean High 43, Charlotte Amalie High 32:

The Devil Rays rallied from a two-point halftime deficit to beat the Hawks (3-2) and advance to today’s championship game.

Down 22-20 at the half, Kean High (3-1) outscored its island rival 23-11 over the third and fourth quarters to take control of the game.

Jahfari Samuel Jr. scored a game-high 12 points for the Devil Rays.

Ramon Robles Jr. led Charlotte Amalie High with 11 points.

 

 

Girls Division

Charlotte Amalie High 31, Central High 30:

The Lady Hawks improved to 2-0, but had to withstand a second half rally by the Lady Caribs (1-1) and set up today’s championship game rematch.

Charlotte Amalie High led 19-10 at the halftime break, only to see Central outscore them 20-12 to make the game close.

Kalyah Rogers led the lady Hawks with 12 points, while Breyanne Roberts had 12 points to lead the Lady Caribs.
